The coalition achieved a great result, taking 80 seats of a possible 151. After eight years in opposition, SDP will now lead the government under its 45-year old leader Zoran Milanović.

Interim PES President, Sergei Stanishev welcomed the result, stating that; "To achieve such a progressive result for Croatia in the same week that the EU Accession Treaty is due to be signed, is perfect timing. My congratulations go to Zoran Milanovic for this great achievement".

On Friday 9 December, Croatia will sign its EU Accession Treaty in Brussels. Croatia´s road towards EU membership had been initiated under the previous SDP-led government in 2002.
On election night SDP leader Zoran Milanovic commented: “Our politics will be a politics of justice and fair compensation for honest work, Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for giving us your trust, and a chance to successfully wake up Croatia”.

This kind of result reached in Croatia, on the threshold of EU membership, shows that the pendulum towards progressive politics and a common European future, continues.
