The PES Foreign Policy Network will bring together experts from all PES member parties and will work closely with other relevant initiatives by the PES, such as the ministerial meetings for foreign affairs, defense and development. It will hold its first meeting in Brussels on June 16th and will meet at least twice every year.
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said: “I welcome the creation of the new PES Foreign Policy Network, which will contribute to a stronger, more coherent, and more progressive foreign policy in the EU. Sergei Stanishev is the ideal candidate for the job and I am confident that he will excel in his new responsibility. With the changes brought about by the Lisbon Treaty, notably the ongoing construction of the new External Action Service, foreign policy has achieved an unprecedented place in EU affairs. Sergei has the experience and the vision to ensure that our new Network can immediately plug into this new framework”.
The network will help the PES deal with issues such as globalization, security and neighbourhood policy, ensuring that our progressive strategies are implemented over the long term.
