PES President says it is high time for a solution in Cyprus

Meeting in Brussels ahead of the PES Prime Ministers’ meeting, PES President Sergei Stanishev and Cyprus President Demetris Christofias discussed a number of issues of relevance including the upcoming EU presidency, the financial crisis, the progressive plan for growth and jobs and the island’s peace talks.

Commenting on the meeting, President Stanishev said: “With the date setting the start of the Cyprus EU rotating Presidency approaching, the meeting with President Christofias provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the current challenges faced by the EU and the contribution that the progressive family can make to support Youth employment, strengthen social cohesion and fairness at this time of crisis.” 

He added: “The PES is strongly committed to a political comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue. I very much welcome the efforts of President Christofias to contribute to a negotiated and fair settlement for all parties.”
