“The conservative measures are the real tragedy of Europe” PES President tells PSOE congress

06/02/2012

The Party of European Socialists (PES) President Sergei Stanishev condemned the conservative answers to the crisis, describing the indiscriminate budget cuts and their dramatic social cost as; “the real tragedy of Europe” . He was speaking at the plenary session of the 38th Federal Congress of the Spanish Socialist Worker’s Party (PSOE). Against the backdrop of the Congress, which took place in Seville, the election for Secretary General of the PSOE was held among 956 delegates from all across Spain.

Regarding the Congress, Stanishev stated: “This is the beginning of the fight back. In Spain, as in Europe, there is the pressing need for concrete, progressive solutions to the crisis. We need to listen to everyone who wants to be heard, we need to act. We, socialists, will not stand still”. He added that; “the conservative measures are only worsening the situation with their systematic destruction of the welfare state. Nowadays, around 6 million young people in the European Union are unemployed: all progressive forces need to defend a youth “guarantee”, one of our key priorities for 2012 and a must in any political agenda. We have to fight tirelessly for a progressive future based on investment, growth and strong democratic standards”.

The 38th Federal Congress, gathered more than 3,000 national and international participants, as well as European and world leaders.
