Article by Philip Cordery
Party of European Socialists General Secretary

For two years now, the people of Europe have been fed a diet of almost uninterrupted bad news. Since September 2008, when the financial crisis went global, the continent’s population has been subjected to the shocks of drastic indebtedness and record levels of unemployment. The fall-out from the mismanagement of the financial services sector has been drastic. The consequences for the European Social Model are potentially ruinous.

The debate revolved around two main topics: how to make European Institutions more democratic and how to get citizens interested in the EU.

The second day of EU4U conference started with a debate on Social Europe.

As in the first day, the discussion was introduced by the pannel but its content was widely developed by the public - both people physically attending and participants following the livestreaming and commenting online. The questions sent via internet were regularly integrated in the debate.

The EU4U is an interactive conference organized by SOLIDAR and FEPS.

After a debate going online on EU4U.info it was time to gather physically and discuss how to further engage citizens with the EU and how to strengthen social policies in Europe. But the main thing about the conference was the role given to the public. People physically attending and especially people following the conference online WERE the actors. They asked questions, they launched the debate and they were the ones shaping the whole session.

Herman Van Rompuy reminds in a newspaper article (Dagens Nyheter Stockholm 8.5.2010) the European citizens that the fate of Europe is at stake during the present economic crisis. Fully aware of the credibility gap in the EU he asks them to look on the EU not as political and diplomatic drama in Brussels but as a project concerning the welfare and safety of 500 millions people.
