The Party of European Socialists (PES) Council, held on November 24th in Brussels, culminated in the adoption of three pivotal documents for the future of the progressive forces in Europe. These texts, approved by public vote, outline the PES vision and beliefs, and pave the way for a common candidate for the European elections in 2014.

New PES interim President, Sergei Stanishev, stated that; “this PES Council has taken concrete, meaningful decisions. We have a dynamic European Party that has strengthened our principles, proposed answers to the crisis and that will re-engage Europeans in the democratic process”.

The three adopted documents are the following:

  • The Resolution: Selecting our common candidate in 2014 defines the process that will lead to a democratically mandated candidate for European Commission President. It is the PES response to the demands from ordinary people to have a stronger and more human connection with Europe.
  • The General Resolution describes in detail the PES vision for growth, investment and jobs based on inclusive policy and anchored to real economy. It sets out a plan to tame the financial markets and, above all, aims to put Europe’s people back in the driving seat.
  • The Declaration of Principles, result of 12 months of continuous consultation, is the main pillar of the PES core beliefs. This relaunching and redrafting is by no means a departure from the PES principles: on the contrary, it is a solid return to them.
