At their Statutory Meeting in Copenhagen on Friday 23 March, PES Women pledged to wholeheartedly support Swedish politician (former SAP Party leader) Mona Sahlin, in her bid to be new Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO). The pledge follows Ms. Sahlin’s nomination for the post by the Swedish government.

On 23rd March PES Women held its yearly statutory meeting in Copenhagen.

In presence of Danish Minister for Gender Equality Manu Sareen and Spokesperson on Gender Equality Rasmus Langhoff MP, PES Women welcomed the Danish EU Presidency priorities to tackle gender inequality.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) today joined with Belgian member parties PS Belge and Sp.A to highlight the huge unemployment crisis faced by millions of young women in Europe. The action, which took place in Brussels, on international women’s day, was part of “Women on the Bridge”, a wider event organised by European and Belgian Women’s organisations. The event took place at Brussels canal.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Zita Gurmai MEP, President of PES Women, has emphasized the need for a European Youth Guarantee. The rapidly growing number of unemployed young women is set to have a deep and sustained impact on society. Ms. Gurmai delivered her message at the European Young Socialists Winter University.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) has expressed its support for the Hunger March and the utmost need to draw attention to the alarming economic situation and democratic deficit of the country. The Hunger March started in Borsod County, one of Hungary’s poorest, and headed towards Budapest. The journey was approximately 190 km long, traveling across nearly half of the country in temperatures below -10°C. The slogan of the protest became “Work, Bread”.

The Socialist International held its Council meeting on 23-24 January 2012 in San Jose, Costa Rica. The two day international gathering, hosted by the Partido Liberación Nacional and bringing together socialist leaders, was opened by President Laura Chinchilla.

Socialist International Women (SIW) held its council meeting in capital city of Costa Rica, San José this weekend. The debates at the annual session focussed on the state of play in the international fight for sexual and reproductive freedom. The Party of the European Socialists (PES) and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament was represented by MEP and PES Women President Zita Gurmai.

The release of the report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) on 23 November 2011 has confirmed that repression of Bahraini citizens resulting in torture and deaths have occurred since the beginning of revolutions in the country. Furthermore, the BICI reviewed all aspects of violations of rights in Bahrain in the time period of February and March 2011. The Bahraini regime has put in place a Commission to report on the findings of the BICI.
