For the past years the Serbian people and government have been working tirelessly towards EU Accession. Under the leadership of the Democratic Party (DS) Serbia has met all the criteria set down by the EU in order to achieve Candidate Status.

The second round of the Serbian Presidential elections will take place on May 20th between Boris Tadic (Democratic Party) and Tomislav Nikolic (Serbian Progressive Party). The PES believes that Boris Tadic is the obvious candidate to lead Serbia in the coming years.

The European Council on the 1st March 2012 decided to grant Serbia official candidate status, furthering the progress towards Serbian Accession to the EU. The PES President, Sergei Stanishev stated that this decision was due to the work of the Government, the DS Party and particularly President Boris Tadic’s strategic vision. “Each post on this path has been navigated by Boris Tadic and the DS Party with assuredness. Each request from the European Union was met. From the initial Commission assessment to yesterday’s Council decision, each challenge has been negotiated with a steady hand”, said the PES President.

PES President Sergei Stanishev and leader of S&D Group Hannes Swoboda met with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister of Serbia Mirko Cvetkovic in Belgrade. The delegation praised the domestic achievements of Tadic’s government and the strong push towards European integration. The meetings took place ahead of the general elections.

The Party of European Socialists and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D Group) in the European Parliament will lead a High Level delegation of European social democrats to Belgrade, Serbia on 23-24 February.

Following the signing of the Croatian Accession Treaty to the European Union, SDP Croatia sought and has been granted full member status of the Party of European Socialists (PES). Signing of the EU Accession Treaty and the subsequent referendum supporting Croatian membership of the EU is an historic moment to be celebrated by the Croatian and European people alike.

This week, after more than a year without a government, the new State Government of Bosnia Herzegovina was formed. The government has been formed with Ministers coming from the six political parties involved in the negotiations. The new Government also adopted a new state budget.

Croatia has today voted in favour of Accession into the EU, and becomes the 28th Member of the European Union in 2013. The PES looks forward to welcoming Croatia as the next EU Member State.

This Friday saw the latest important progression on EU enlargement, with the signing of Croatia’s Accession Treaty in the European Council. Croatia applied for EU membership in 2003 and, subject to ratification of the Treaty, will join the EU on 1 July 2013.

Multiparty elections for the seventh parliament since independence were held in Croatia on Sunday the 4th of December. The Croatian Social Democratic Party led its ‘Kukuriku’ coalition of four progressive parties to victory. The coalition’s platform had highlighted European themes, such as Economic growth and new jobs.
