The PES Leaders’ Meeting held in Berlin on 24 March 2007 established a Working Group on the Future of Europe together with its Leaders’ declaration marking the 50th anniversary of the European Union .
The New Social Europe Report and its ten principles summarise PES’ vision of Europe’s future. In order to assure a Europe where each citizen counts, the voice of European socialists and social democrats have to be heard in the debate about the institutional and political reform of the EU.
The PES Working Group on the Future of Europe gives socialists and social democrats the opportunity to exchange and discuss their views on the constitutional Treaty. The Group will follow the development of the work on the Treaty organised by the EU Council. The Working Group can also prepare contributions to the PES debate about the future of Europe.
The work will mainly focus around two questions:
-
How can we go forward towards a New Social Europe?
-
How can the European Union become more efficient and able to deliver on issues of real concern for Europe’s citizens?
