PES President speaks at a Socialists' Party of Catalonia meeting, in Vilopriu

PES President travelled to Catalonia (Spain) to support the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC) ahead of regional elections. During a gathering that marked the start of the political season of the party, the PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen defended a progressive way to tackle the economic crisis in Europe – by prioritising investment and establishing a financial transaction tax (FTT).

The PES President participated in the Autumn congress of the PSC in Vilopriu, Spain, on 26 August. Addressing the more than 400 participants in Vilopriu the PES leader said; “We need continuity in Catalonia. I am confident that electors will renew the mandate of PSC at the next regional elections.Only progressives can guarantee citizens a fair approach based on growth and job creation.”

Referring to the economic crisis in Europe, PES President stated “We cannot fall prey to the conservatives’ rhetoric. Our way out of the crisis must prioritise investment and growth, instead of focusing only on budget cuts. Additional revenue can be gained by implementing a 0.05% tax on financial transactions; this tax would allow us to have an extra 200 billion euros per year in Europe with zero cost to the common citizen – as only professional financial actors would be taxed.”

Other speakers to the PSC meeting included José Montilla, First Secretary of the PSC and President of the Regional Government, Lluis Maria de Puig, Former President of the Council of Europe General Assembly and Maria Badia, Vice-President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament.
