Poul Nyrup Rasmussen

In a headline article for the academic journal Internationale Politik und Gesellschaft (‘International Politics and Society’ published by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation), PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen has outlined ten theses on the future of social democracy in Europe.

The article which can be found HERE opens this special edition of the Internationale Politik und Gesellschaft journal, which focuses exclusively on the future of Social Democracy.

The PES President concentrates in the first four theses on how such a platform can best be built, which includes, in future, putting up a PES candidate for the office of President of the Commission. The remaining six theses explain how European Social Democrats can showcase the social democratic policies that point the way to a positive future, including an active European labour market policy, green growth, gender equality, strengthening the welfare state, and fundamental reform of the financial sector.

In addition to the contribution by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, other authors explain why Europe needs more social democracy and why that requires the cultivation of a viable European social democracy. Also integrating this special number is an interim report on the current debate on the future of social democracy and analyses of the state and prospects of social democratic parties in Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, France, the USA, Norway, Canada, Poland and South America.
