FEPS is the European progressive political foundation close to the Party of European Socialists embodying a new way of thinking on the social democratic, socialist and labour scene in Europe. Massimo D’Alema became Prime Minister of Italy in 1998. In December 2000 he was elected President of the Democrats of the Left (Democratici di Sinistra, DS). In October 2003 he was elected Vice-President of the Socialist International. In June 2004 Mr D'Alema became a Member of the European Parliament. In 2006 he was appointed deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary in the Prodi government. He has been the President of the political Foundation "Fondazione di cultura politica Italianieuropei" since 2000. He is currently a member of the Chamber of Deputies.
PES congratulates FEPS first President D’Alema

At the last General Assembly of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), on June 30th 2010, former Italian Prime Minister Massimo D’Alema was elected President with the unanimous support of its members.
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, commenting on the appointment, said: “I congratulate Massimo D’Alema for his election. He will be the first one to hold this important office and I am absolutely certain he is the right man to lead our progressive foundation and to contribute with his experience and vision to the success of progressives in Europe and beyond.”
