PES congratulates the Croatian people on vote for Accession to the EU

22/01/2012

Croatia has today voted in favour of Accession into the EU, and becomes the 28th Member of the European Union in 2013. The PES looks forward to welcoming Croatia as the next EU Member State.

PES President Sergei Stanishev stated that the “Croatian people have made enormous and tireless efforts in this 8-years journey to meet the goals of accession negotiations. This vote shows their commitment to the EU. This is a historical moment for Croatia. But its significance goes well beyond the country itself. This is excellent news for all Europeans, for the Balkan region and for the enlargement process. It is now up to the EU to fully meet the expectations of the Croatian people.”

He added: “I would like to congratulate SDP Croatia for its positive campaign for accession. With Zoran Milanovic leading the country as Prime Minister and Ivo Josipovic as President, Croatia is on track to be a vibrant and positive force in the EU. The PES, the political family most committed to the enlargement process, is today very proud to see a yes vote to a strong and progressive Croatia coming through the EU doors. It is now important for Member States to ratify the Treaty without delay so that the 1 July 2013 deadline can be met.”
