The Party of European Socialists and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D Group) in the European Parliament will lead a High Level delegation of European social democrats to Belgrade, Serbia on 23-24 February.

PES President Sergei Stanishev and leader of S&D Group Hannes Swoboda will meet high ranking state representatives and members of the Serbian Democratic Party (DS), including Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister of Serbia Mirko Cvetkovic and Dragoljub Micunovic, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the National Assembly. The delegation will deliver a strong progressive message in view of the upcoming legislative elections in Serbia.

PES President Sergei Stanishev stated: “President Boris Tadic and the DS, a PES Member Party, have been working tirelessly towards accession to the EU, achieving great results for the Serbian people. We are very proud as a political family for his efforts, the crucial reforms he has carried out and for steering the country with resolution through such difficult economic turmoil. There are some very important issues to be discussed with our Serbian partners, particularly in light of their continued progress towards EU Accession. The PES has always been steadfast in its support of Serbian accession to the EU and I am absolutely certain that it will be the Democratic Party to lead the country there”. He added: “I am looking forward to a successful delegation on the eve of critical elections. The PES supports President Tadic and the DS Party at this crucial electoral deadline for Serbia and its path to the EU.”

The delegation will also meet EU officials, international organizations active on the ground, experts and the media. Discussions will focus on the current political landscape of the country and Serbia’s upcoming elections. The PES delegation will also address the state of play in EU-Serbia relations and the EU accession process. The PES is committed to its partnerships in the Western Balkans and the continued progress of the EU Enlargement process in the region.
