Floods in Romania: the PES calls for solidarity

06/07/2010

Since a couple of weeks the Eastern part of Romania has been badly hit by floods. The PES expresses its strong solidarity with the people of the regions affected by the drastic consequences of the floods.

So far, 22 people have lost their life and some are still missing. Around 8,000 people have been evacuated, 120 cities have been under water, of which 36 in the last 24 hours. And the worse may still be to come in the next days.

The Romanian government says that the damages could reach up to 0.6% of the country’s GDP, in which case it will ask the EU for official assistance.

The PES calls the European Commission as well as all Member States to contribute financially to the rebuilding of public and private buildings and compensating for the economic and environmental damages suffered by the poorest region of Romania, and possibly of Europe.
