City groups

So far, one of PES activists' biggest successes has been the setting up of a PES activist city group network. From Lisbon to Bucharest, from Dublin to Florence over 130 working groups and discussion clubs on European policies have joined the network.

Definition

There are two kinds of PES activist city groups. Some are working groups of PES member parties. They are active on local and regional levels wanting to promote discussion about Europe. Others are expatriate members of different PES member parties wanting to get together and get engaged with local as well as European politics.

PES activists’ city groups are not a formal structure of the PES. They are a loose network of local groups and are sometimes organized as a local association. By connecting to the network, these groups gain a direct communication channel to the PES and to each other.

Why creating a city group?

  • Your group is listed on the PES activist city group Google map
  • You can invite PES speakers at your meetings
  • You are part of a mailing list together with all other city groups, so you can directly approach each other
  • You can present your organization, activities and ideas on PES blog and on PES Activists Exchange Corner
  • You can post your meetings on the interactive PES calendar
  • You can fuel PES reflection by sending papers, comments and ideas.

How can you join the network?

  1. Take a look at the Google Map of PES activist city groups and check if there is a city group in your area. If so, send us an e-mail and we will provide you with the contact details of the responsible person. You will then be able to contact this person so (s)he can add you to the city group
  2. If there is no city group in your region, you can create your own:
    • a) Consult the city group Google Map and find out if there are already groups from your member party connected to the network. If so, contact them about the procedures for setting up a city group within your PES member party
    • b) Contact your party to discuss the creation of a new group
    • c) Send us an e-mail with the details of your city group so we can add it to our Google map. Please mention:
      • Name of the group
      • Where your group is situated
      • Contact details
      • Contact person which will be added to the PES activist city group mailing list
  3. Please note that every new local group set up to discuss European policies should be inclusive and in agreement with the local party. Your group should fulfill this requirement to be on the list of PES city groups.
