Call for rapporteurs on A fair economy
The PES is looking for 2 activists (one rapporteur and one substitute) willing to be in charge of the activists’ contribution to the Fundamental Programme/Policy Forum on A fair economy.
Read the call here and reply to this forum entry to apply.
Dear Sara,
I would like to submit my letter of motivation so as to present to the PES Policy Forum on the theme of A Fair Economy.
I have been a PES activist and organiser for a number of years, organising the first PES activist group in Scotland and often hold stalls and other events at which I promote the work of the EU institutions, PES and the Scottish Labour MEP's David Martin and Catherine Stihler.
In the context of research and policy, I have been a student of Philosophy and Politics at University over the last four years and during this time have completed many works and studies on European issues and institutions. I currently study "Regionalism in Europe" and would hope to combine this role with the work I am currently undertaking.
I have also worked in political partys and for a number of Scottish Labour MSP's as a research intern at the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh and office assistant in Inverness. I have also been my local partys Youth Officer for a number of years and have been the Scottish Young Labour North Co-ordinator since last November. On top of this I am also standing as a local council candidate in the upcoming elections here in May.
I have been backing rigorously the campaign for a Financial Transaction Tax across europe and often use blogs, Facebook and other online forums to discuss issues such as the Tobin Tax. I heard many young people from across Europe speak at the PES Young Europeans conference in September last year in the Parliament at Brussels which I attended as a delegate.
I am willing to discuss and engage other people from all political leanings and would relish the opportunity to present the findings of this important issue to the policy forum latter this year.
If any one would like to get in touch with me about this issus, I would like to hear from you!

Philippe

Hello Sara,
I would submit my letter of motivation
Participate more actively in PES really interests me for two simple reasons:
-The Socialist Party
- The Europe
I currently have an active professional life at IBM (English is a requirement). My goal is the development of the business in the walloon region.
I have the responsibility in BELUX, the development of the "smarter cities" strategy.
But I am also very active locally in my area of Mons and the citizens. In fact I run a volunteer task force of more than three years on the "comfort and security people." Citizens, police and politicians are actively involved. I develop the local economy through business creation, job creation, coaching startups, SME's, sustainable development ... I have indeed created the EuroGreen IT Innovation Center in Mons.I would love to participate more actively in the PES and as a speaker or as a contributor/rapporteur.
I will run in the next elections in 2012 so I think the best conditions fulfill the PES to help in its activities.
Thanking you very much,
Philippe

Dear Sara,
Hereby I would like to express my interest for a rapporteur position in PES. I consider it a great opportunity for me to grow both personally and professionally.
I am graduating with a BSc in Economics and Business Administration in June 2012 from Aarhus University in Denmark. Economics and trade were among the major courses in my study program. I have worked on the economic policies, tax and legal issues of different countries. I believe that I have a valuable pack of knowledge on this topic, which makes me a competitive candidate. Moreover, my enrollment into the international program gave me the
ability to obtain not only the professional qualifications, but also
gain a valuable experience of being in an international environment,
meeting different people, discussing events.
Besides studies, I am an active citizen, involved into different social and political activities. It all started with socialdemocratic youth union which I joined almost 5 years ago. From that point I realized that politics is what I really enjoy. Later I became a member of Lithuanian socialdemoratic party which I still belong to. Recently, I have participated in the training course on European Citizenship with the purpose of increasing youth participation and adapting values such as democracy, human rights and equality. Moreover, I am attending different conferences and meetings, the most recent of which has been the PES youth conference-debate called “Do you want a different Europe?”, where youth unemployment, education and participation were discussed. Through this experience I have gathered good communication skills and am able to present my ideas in a fluent and confident manner. I am conscious about what is happening in the world, comprising financial and political situation.
Within this position I would be able to combine my both passions, economics and politics. As one of my key obejctives is continuous growth, I believe this opportunity to express my view and knowledge in a tangible way would give me priceless experience. In addition, I would love to support your team with motivation and engagement. I believe that I can make a meaningful contribution because of my training so far and enthusiasm for such a big opportunity to work with you.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope my qualifications will be of interest to you, and I am looking forward to hearing a response.
Sincerely,
Greta Petrosiute
Dear Sara. I would like to submit my name for consideration as rapporteur for the "Fair Economy" stream of the activists contribution to the Fundamental Programme/Policy Forum.
I am a veteran of the Labour Party and Trade Union movement in Ireland and Britain for over 30 years and have been an activist with the Party of European Socialists and citygroup co-ordinator in Dublin for the last three to four years. I was the local organiser of the very successful PES activists Forum in Ireland in 2009 when over 300 PES activists from across Europe came to Dublin. I am a regular attender at the Congresses and Councils of the PES, one of the joint organisers of the "Campaign for a PES Primary" and am very active in a wide range of on-line fora and social media.
In the Irish Labour Party I have developed a strong reputation for articulating the European perspective on economic and social matters when it comes to policy development. I am a strong believer in the idea that no country on its own can resolve the challenges and threats presented by globalised capitalism nor succesfully negotiate an exit from the current economic, social and democratic crises. A strong European political party of the Left with a compelling, inspiring and deliverable policy programme is absolutely essential to our being able to confront the politics of austerity and create an alternative that will persuade the people of Europe to place their trust once again in our political family.
This PES initiative to engage European activists in the development of economic, social and democratic policy is to be hugely welcomed. It places our political movement at the forefront of how European politics can engage with citizens and activists. It demonstrates the vital connection between activism in our own towns, cities and countries and activism at the European level. This is an initiative that I would be very proud to be associated with.
I can confirm that, if selected, I will work diligently to promote and moderate on-line debate on economic affairs within our activist community and that I will produce a fair and balanced report on all activists' views.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Amitiés socialistes ... Desmond O'Toole

Dear PES-friends, Nijmegen, 26 februari 2012
I am very much interested to be the PES-rapporteur on the topic ‘A Fair Economy’ for the PES fundamental programme. I am convinced that the proposed way to use Re:new for a bottom-up preparation towards writing the PES-programma for the elections in 2014, is a very valuable contribution to a genuine European social-democratic awareness. That is essential for the step ahead towards a more federal Europe that is urgently needed. I would love to contribute to that process.
My preference for the topic ‘A fair economy’ stems from my conviction that in the very turbulent times ahead (with an economic clash between the US and China forthcoming, as well as aggravating climate-, energy and foodproblems) the ‘Rijnland’ European model is the only option for a decent world. And this should be a veritable social-democratic Europe, not the present neoliberal ‘austerity-only’ Europe. In that sense Europe needs social-democracy. But social-democracy also needs Europe. A real social-democratic programme can no longer be realised on a national level, in any European country.
I think I qualify well for the task, thanks to my political and writing skills .
In my working life I have been a policy adviser at local level and as such I have writen numerous policy documents on a great number of subjects. Sinds the beginning of the seventies I hace been engaged in left wing politics. From 1978-1986 I was a member of the Nijmegen city council. This experience made me well versed in considering political strategic fields. Since 2009 I concentrate my political activities on European policy.
At the webpage of the Nijmegen PES-citygroup I facilitate the discussion and lead the members to interesting publications. I facilitated the webdiscussion in my hometown in 2011 on the renewal of Dutch social democracy (see http://vanwaardenijmegen.wordpress.com/ ).
I wrote a number of publications on Europe (see my CV). I am a member of the executive of the national PvdA Working group on Europa. As such I am participating in a working group preparing the discussion in the PvdA for the programme for the European elections in 2014.
I hope you consider me a good candidate for your team of rapporteurs. The combination with my involvment in the preparation for the elections in 2014 in the PvdA may offer useful added value on both sides of the proces.
I look forward to your reply.
With kindest regards,
Chris Peeters

Dear PES activists,
I am Laura Panadès, a PES activist from Barcelona (Spain). I apply for a position as PES activist rapporteur.
I am graduated in BSc in Business Administration and Management and BA in Law. I speak Spanish, Catalan, English, German and a bit of French. I am finishing my Master in Legal Sciences and I plan to begin my PhD soon. I am currently working at University as a scholar of the Ministry of Economics and Competitiveness. My field of specialisation is international tax and financial law. My topics of interest are the accountability of public-private partnerships, the financial transaction tax and the institutional design of the European Union.
I would like to volunteer as PES activist rapporteur for several reasons. First, I have a strong interest about European affairs. Second, I am a strong supporter of European integration. Third, I have a casual curiosity about politics that is continuously (and exponentially!) growing. Fourth, I love performing research and writing reports as this is, in fact, what my work is about. Fifth, I know activists all around Europe, with who I frequently discuss the news of their countries on-line. And as the time goes by, I enjoy it more and more. Definitely, watching the news on TV is not the same as discussing their impressions.
I think I could be a good candidate for this position due to several factors. First, I am used to teach at the University following the guidelines for the European Higher Education Area (Bologna process), so I am used to public speaking, to process various sources of information and to present results in a clear and understandable way. Second, throughout all my years in academia, I have been developing my skills on critical reasoning and debating. Third, I have a solid background on both Law and Economics, so I think I could be helpful for Re: new’s section on “A Fair Economy”. Fourth, I have an intrinsic motivation: a younger sister. My access to education has always been granted by public aid: I have always attended public schools and public university and I have been able to learn languages thanks to scholarships. Now I would like my sister and others to have the same opportunities as me.
Unfortunately, time is a very scarce resource for me so I may not have as much time as this position requires. However, I would be pleased to be accepted as an assistant to the rapporteur or as a member of the 4-people reserve list. And under all circumstances I would be delighted to be able to represent my comrades both via 2.0 technologies and in international forums.
I will be looking forward to hear any news from you.
Kind regards,
Laura Panadès

Dear Sara,
please see a couple of lines from my article I presented last year (2011) at the European Academy in Berlin (International Conference) for your review.
... The global financial crisis, as bad as any since the stock market crashes of 1929, has showed us that there must be something wrong with the structure of financial regulation. At the beginning many were worried that regulation would do damage to the markets but now there is a need for strengthened global regulatory framework. In order to stabilize the financial system, government measures have not always been fully compatible with the principle of free and open markets (risk of distorting of competition). It is clear that the financial system is undergoing a very challenging period with consequences for the future of global finance....
...This financial crisis, which has become a global economic crisis, is becoming an employment crisis (not excluding the social crisis and political crisis)!...
...Without a doubt, the current market system must be transformed and re-regulated. On 23 September 2009, the European Commission adoptet a proposal to strengthen the financial supervision through the European Systemic Risk Council (ESRC), which monitors and assess risks to the stability of the European financial systemas a whole (so called "macro-prudential supervision") and the European System of Financial Supervisors (ESFS) which supervise individual financial institutions (so called "micro-prudential supervision"). During the year 2010 the EU has created the European Financial Stabilisation Mechanism (EFSM), which consists of some €750 billion divided into following parts: €440 billion in loan guarantees from eurozone Member States; €60 billion made by the European Union; and €250 billion would be provided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Such mechanisms are seen as essential to safeguard cross-border banking and reduce the overall tensions...
...But what happens next? Have we already seen the peak of the financial crisis? In my view, rising number of unpaid loans would trigger a second wave of the crisis. The financial solvency of European countries (and not only EU countries) is in doubt. It seems that modern capitalism is incapable of realizing the promise of economic security and the elimination of poverty. Similar situation can be seen in the USA, where each year since 1969, Congress has spent more money than its income. The U.S. debt reached $14 trillion mark and will climb to an estimated $19.6 trillion by 2015, according to a US Treasury Department report. This means, that every American has a debt of about $ 45.000. The crash (both a liquidity crunch and a credit crunch) happened because households consumed too much, sending their debts to the banks. The banks sent the debts to the governments (e.g. Ireland or Greece). They send their debts to the European Union: but to whom will the EU send the bills when there is no money more? In this regard, 2011-2012 looks horribly like 2007 or 2008. Will the Eurozone Collapse? No, it will probably not collapse. It will continue, but at a high price....
Thank you and wish you a good day.
Regards,
Rastislav
