On March 4th, a delegation from the PES led by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen was in Vienna to launch the campaign “Regulate Global Finance Now!” in Austria. He was invited by the campaign partners in Austria, the Chamber of Labour of Vienna, Arbeiterkammer Wien, and the Austrian trade-union confederation, ÖGB.

0.05%... not much, hey? Imagine if we were introducing such a tax on all financial transactions. You know, the billions of billions of transactions taking place every year worldwide.
On the evening of Wednesday the 24th of February, there was a reception for the Brussels Socialist and Progressive sister parties. The PES would like to congratulate Josephine Wood and the Brussels Labour branch for taking the initiative to organize such a successful evening where over 160 people attended and at least 18 sister parties and groups were represented.
A PES Representation, chaired by PES Presidency Member, MP and SAP Sweden Foreign Policy Spokesperson Urban Ahlin, attended the 4th Congress of the Partido dos Trabalhadores of Brazil as well as its International Seminar on 18th-20th February in the country’s capital, Brasilia.

For the first time in its history, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) will have a woman President, Mercedes Bresso, President of the Piedmont Region (Italy). She was elected to her new position on 10 February 2010 at the inaugural plenary session of the CoR's fifth term of office, which will be the first five-year term, following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty.
On Saturday 24 April, the PES will organise a PES European Day of Action on “Introducing a Financial Transaction Tax”. The PES member parties and all PES activists are invited to organise activities on this theme on the same day.
How do we create a more prosperous, more social and more environmental friendly Europe whilst at the same time overcoming the financial and economic crisis, without threatening the long term sustainability of public finances? This was one of the questions for the PES Social Europe Network to answer.
Yesterday evening, after a successful Silver Rose Awards ceremony, Solidar and the PES presidency hosted a dinner in the European Parliament. The high level attendance, made of PES presidency members, nominee European Commissioner László Andor, MEPs, NGOs, and trade unionists debated the priorities of the 2009-2014 mandate.
