The decision by the PvdA (Dutch Labour Party) to withdraw from Government was hailed as a “principled stand” by Party of European Socialist President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen.
Portuguese national and former President of the Party of European Socialists (PES) Vítor Constâncio has been nominated Vice-President of the European Central Bank (ECB) in a “quick” and “unanimous” decision, as expressed by current President Jean-Claude Trichet. The 16 countries that integrate the Euro-Zone have entrusted him with key responsibilities to help the ECB achieve its main goal: to maintain the euro’s purchasing power and price stability.
The Party of European Socialists (PES) condemns the decision taken by the Constitutional Court of Turkey on Friday 11 December 2009 to ban the DTP, one of the main opposition parties in the Parliament. As part of this ruling, 37 members and executives of the party were banned, including its leader, Mr. Ahmet Turk. Although 19 members of the party still sit in the Parliament, they have lost their official group status and consequently have only a marginal role.
The PES is deeply concerned with the ongoing closure case against the Democratic Society Party (DTP) in Turkey, the final hearing of which will be held the 8th of December 2009.
The PES has become increasingly concerned over the treatment of their member party which is in opposition in Bulgaria. Since the elections in Bulgaria in July the new government, led by the right-wing has intimated moves away from respecting the principle of democracy and suggested that the Bulgarian Socialist Party may be banned.
