Sergei Stanishev, PES interim President
The PES is the most modern, innovative, and democratic European Party. Yet we are always striving to improve our structure. Our ambition is to secure a progressive and fair European Union. Between now and our Congress in Bucharest next September, we will take major steps towards achieving this goal. I am honoured to have been chosen to guide the PES during this transition period.
Renewal of the Party
Our new declaration of principles, has been enriched by the engagement from over 50 civil society organizations. The declaration will be the basis to outline and develop our ‘fundamental programme’. On our party structures, and principally on our ‘Common candidate’ process, we will need to invest in our member parties to put these decisions into practice.
Tackle the crisis
On the economy as Europe faces its worst crisis since the 1930’s, we propose an alternative way to get the EU back on track. Our way is based on creating jobs and investing in sustainable projects that can ensure a return to growth.
Promote democracy
Our way is also the inclusive way. It is based on a cast iron pledge to protect and promote democracy. Freedom of expression, the highest standards of electoral process, and free media are all fundamental to democracy.
2012 - a key year
2012 will be a successful year for progressives in Europe. The political tide is turning, as people realise that a Europe of austerity-only is a step in the wrong direction. Thanks to you, Europe is starting to see that it must have a progressive future. Thanks to you we are starting to fight back.
