Sarkozy adds to growing political consensus for financial markets reform
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen welcomed comments made by President Sarkozy on the need to strengthen rules governing financial institutions.
Social package - Too little too late
Commenting on the social package presented to the European Parliament this morning by Commissioner Vladimir Spidla and French Minister Xavier Bertrand, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the PES, commented "I applaud Vladimir Spidla for persuading the conservative European Commission to agree this modest package unveiled towards the end of its mandate. But much more needs to be done if the European Commission is serious about renewing Social Europe."

The Party of European Socialists was well-represented at the US Democratic National Convention where Barack Obama was nominated Democratic Presidential candidate. PES Secretary General Philip Cordery “The European socialists and social-democrats support Barack Obama for President. Tunisia under scrutiny says PES
The PES today underlined its support for the women and men who are struggling bravely for freedom, democracy and social justice in Tunisia, and called for the release of activist Zakia Dhifaoui and other detainees.



Barack jam for Obama
PES Activists from Hungary are producing and selling apricot jam to show their support for Barack Obama. As ‘Barack’ means apricot in Hungarian – spelt exactly like Obama’s first name - PES activists made apricot jam in the eastern Hungarian town of Tallya labelled ‘Barack for Obama’ to show their support for the Democratic Presidential candidate.


Sócrates right to bring Portuguese divorce law into line with modern expectations
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen praised the efforts of the Portuguese Socialist Party – and Prime Minister José Sócrates – to modernize Portugal’s divorce laws – and slammed conservative President Cavaco Silva for vetoing it.
