Summit: Europe must put promises into action
9 March 2007
Commenting on the Summit agreement, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists, said "Europe can now be the global front-runner in combating climate change and has a special responsibility to make sure that the promises made today are put into practice."
The PES believes EU leaders are taking a huge step forward in the fight against climate change, but PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen warned "There are difficult discussions ahead and the EU cannot afford to get bogged down in disputes over detail."
He added "There is potential here to create many new jobs and business opportunities in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Europe can be optimistic that it is taking the right road. Europe will benefit from being the pioneer."
