Portugal takes action against discrimination
26 February 2007
The day after the PES day of action for equal pay Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates unveiled a year of action against discrimination including putting into action best practices for equality between women and men in the workplace.
This progressive initiative by the Socialist Government of Portugal is aimed at tackling all forms of discrimination, whether based on gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, belief or disability, and includes a raft of activities at local and national level. Moreover, a budget of up to €76 million has been set to promote non-discrimination among the public.
In the Year of Equal Opportunities for All, the Portuguese Presidency of the EU will also push gender equality as a EU policy: in October, Lisbon will host experts to discuss how to promote equality in business while Porto will be the venue for a seminar on human trafficking.
