Pro EU Government is only viable route for Serbia

Commenting on the outcome of the Serbian elections, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said : “I congratulate the Democratic Party and its Leader Boris Tadic - President of Serbia - for their success in almost doubling the party’s vote and becoming the second party in Serbia. I am confident that you will play a big, positive role in achieving for Serbia a government that is democratic and working for EU integration. I urge all parties who want a new, modern Serbia to come together in a new government. This is the only viable route to build a new forward-looking Serbia. It is the surest route to a peaceful settlement of the Kosovo issue, and the best way to consolidate peace and stability in South East Europe.

As a member of the Party of European Socialists you have our full support. We can promise to you that we will work to engage the EU in a constructive process of integration with Serbia.”

The Party of European Socialists reiterates its support for a democratic and modernised Serbia, committed to the ICTY and that will achieve substantial reforms on the way to EU integration.
