“EU failing to use full potential of half of Workforce ” states Europe’s Left
European Socialists call on EU leaders to boost the number of women in work and ensure working parents can stay in the labour market, in particular through more and better childcare.
On the eve of the European Spring Summit, President of PES Women, Zita Gurmai stated: “As the saying goes, it is the economy stupid! Failing to use the potential of half of the population is economically unviable. We are calling for action for more and better jobs for women because this is the only was to achieve the EU’s economic and social targets.”
“This is not only about delivering social justice for women. Using the skills and full potential of women in the most effective way is our only chance to increase Europe’s productivity and growth.”
“Meeting the 60% target of women in work and improving childcare provision must be central priorities of the Lisbon Strategy.”
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists, added: “This is about a political choice for ordinary people in Europe. The Party of European Socialists has a progressive vision for women in Europe, the European right has a backward-looking agenda full of empty promises”.
