Forum on social Europe

Globalisation is challenging our welfare states. Conservatives say that with increased global competition and an ageing population we must roll back our welfare states. Socialists say that our welfare states need to be modernised to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our way is Social Europe. We believe that combining a free market economy with social protection, more and better jobs and benefits for all is the bedrock of European society. Despite differences in the way we organise our welfare states we all stand together for solidarity, justice and equality. We must modernize our Social Europe because status quo would make our societies vulnerable.

What should European countries do to renew their welfare states? Could the European Union pursue a common ‘Social Europe’, a common direction?

Some points to guide the discussions:
Learning from each other’s experiences ?
How can European social legislation be reinforced ?
Should the EU adopt minimum social standards?
What should the EU do to help its poorest regions?
Protecting public services from liberalisation
How can the EU boost the fight against poverty?
What is the role of the EU in dealing with demographic change?
