PES Group in the Committee of the Regions
The Committee of the Regions associates local and regional authorities to the decision-making of the European Union as a consultative body. The PES group of the Committee of the regions ensures strong representation for the concerns of local and regional authorities led by PES members. The current President of the socialist group of the Committee of the Regions is Mercedes Bresso. She is also member of PES Presidency on behalf in PES group in the CoR.


Mercedes Bresso
Mercedes Bresso was born on 12 July 1944 in Sanremo, Imperia (Italy). She is married and is Doctor in Economics and Commerce. She has been a University professor of economic institutions at the Polytechnic of Turin - Faculty of Engineering since 1973. She has brought the centre-left back to power after almost 15 years of right-wing government in the Piedmont Region. Mercedes Bresso became President of Piedmont in April 2005. She resigned as an MEP and returned to the Committee of the Regions. From 1995 up to 2004, Mercedes Bresso was President of the Province of Turin and President of the Union of the Piedmont Provinces, as well as a member of the Presidency Office of the Union of the Italian Provinces (UPI) in charge of European and international affairs. She was a member of the Committee of the Regions from 1998 to 2004, leading the delegation of the Italian provinces. From 1985 to 1995, she was regional Councillor of Piedmont and in 1994-1995 Regional Minister for Territorial Planning and Parks. She has been PES Group’s President of the Committee of the Regions since 3 February 2006.
