PES Presidency Statement on the situation in Romania
At its meeting in Brussels on 22 September 2005, the Party of European Socialists Presidency expresse its concern regarding the political situation in Romania.
The PES Presidency urges President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu to give priority to the country’s real needs and to ensure the respect of the 1 January 2007 date for EU accession.
Despite the urgent situation with the deterioration of the economic, social and political climate, the Romanian authorities have preferred to engage in an unnecessary conflict with the constitutional court and the opposition. They are willing to replace both parliamentary Chambers Presidents and to modify the local public administration law just in order to change the County Councils Presidents.
The PES condemns the ruling parties PD and PNL for jeopardizing Romania‘s EU accession by provoking endless political instability. The governing coalition of the Alliance D.A must stop its harassment and intimidation to alter the result of the 2004 local elections.
The PES reiterates its request to the governing coalition of the Alliance D.A to fully respect democratic and constitutional principles and to engage in an effective political dialogue with the opposition.
The PES welcomes and supports the PSD initiative for a European Pact, encouraging all the political forces to join in order to ensure the political support needed for Romania‘s accession to the EU on 1 January 2007 and the political stability to consolidate European partners trust in the functioning of Romania democratic system.
