SOCIALISTS NOT CONVINCED BY COMMISSION’S GROWTH WITHOUT INVESTMENT PLAN
Commenting on the European Commission’s announcement today of measures to create more growth and jobs, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists said “Europe desperately needs economic growth and new jobs but the European Commission will not achieve it without investment. Europe needs public and private investment to accompany reform."
He added “The Commission has good intentions and I do not oppose the measures proposed – but without investment they are inadequate.”
“I am disappointed that the Commission President has not been inspired by the recent impressive investment plans announced by the Socialist Governments in Portugal and Spain. The European Commission could make a real impact on employment if it encouraged much stronger cooperation between governments to coordinate further investments, including cross-border projects. It lacks ideas to boost demand.”
