Dutch Referendum on European Constitution

PRESS STATEMENT BY PARTY OF EUROPEAN SOCIALISTS PRESIDENT POUL NYRUP RASMUSSEN

“ The people of Europe are worried about jobs and globalisation. Voters in France and the Netherlands are telling Europe’s leaders to focus on the economy not on the constitution. A decisive response is needed.”

Commenting on the Constitution itself, Mr Rasmussen added “It is now up to the European Heads of Government to come forward with a proposal for tackling the institutional issues which the constitution is intended to resolve.”

He added “The future of the constitution must be clarified. But even more important is the need to create jobs and a sense of economic security.”
