Press release & statement from the president of PES women on the Barosso Commission

Zita Gurmai said: “I categorically refute the views expressed by the Commissioner-designate, Rocco Buttiglione, regarding the role of women in society. The only way to resolve Europe’s problems regarding employment is to ensure equality in the workplace both through the full implementation of European equal pay legislation and the widespread provision of childcare.”

“As a European socialist, I am very proud that socialists in the European Parliament stood firm against a Commissioner-designate who could have acted against women’s rights.”

“I am also extremely happy that as socialists we have protected the Treaty and our common, European values contained therein.”

“Fighting for fundamental rights, in particular gender equality and equal treatment for women and man, must be a priority for Europe. I urge Mr Barroso to ensure that the new proposed European Commission will represent these values and rights to the benefit of all European citizens.”
