The PES and the World Social Forum
After a stop over in South Asia, in Mumbai, India, in 2004, the World Social Forum (WSF) came back to where it all began; Porto Alegre. The Global Progressive Forum organized several events in the framework of the WSF program. Many speakers from the Global Progressive Forum were also invited in different panels of other events.
The PES decided to take the opportunity of its presence in Porto Alegre to organize a seminar together with the SI Mercosur member parties on Mercosur-EU relations. The PES Group was also present at the WSF with a delegation. All in all, about 200 participants from SI and PES member parties (Algeria, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Palestine, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay, UK, US) attended the WSF.
Several PES Presidency members were active in Porto Alegre; Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, PES President ; Zita Gurmai, PES Women President ; Philip Cordery, PES Secretary General; António Guterres, SI President ; Luis Ayala, SI Secretary General; Elio Di Rupo, PS Leader, Belgium.
