President Christophias: a historic opportunity for the future of Cyprus

PES President, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen met with President of Cyprus Demetris Christophias, in Brussels, prior to the EU Council, on 13 March.

The PES warmly welcomed the victory of Demetris Christophias on 24 February 2008.

President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and President Demetris Christophias spoke about the challenges ahead for Cyprus and its new centre-left government; the reunification of the island and the improvement of the living standards of Cypriot citizens.

The President of the Party of European Socialists declared; “I am convinced that the victory of President Christophias is historic for the future of Cyprus and the future of the region. Under his leadership, I see a clear momentum to reunite peacefully Cypriot people in a common journey. We support him because he represents the future and the way ahead!”.

Rasmussen added “In your efforts for a reunified and social Cyprus you can rely on my personal support. I am confident that we will develop a very good cooperation with your government, in which  EDEK, the Social Democratic Party of Cyprus, plays a substantial role.”
