PES supports Hariri commemoration
13 February 2008
The Party of European Socialists gives its full support to those demonstrating in Beirut on 14 February to commemorate – and protest at - the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “Three years after the terrible murder of Rafik Hariri your hopes for free, independent and democratic Lebanon can still be achieved.”
“We, the PES, are still with you. We encourage the people of Lebanon to continue your efforts to make peaceful progress and to condemn political violence.”
“We continue to support your government and urge your Parliament to elect a new President. We note the Arab League Plan to facilitate the election of a new President.”
“We have not forgotten you, and we have not forgotten our support for the International Court and for implementation of UN resolutions 1559 and 1701.”
“We will work to maintain the EU’s commitment to your country, and to keep our Foreign Ministers focussed on peace in the Middle East.”
