PES Women say Stop Cervical Cancer
22 January 2008
Zita Gurmai, President of PES Women, today led women from many of Europe’s socialist, social democratic and labour parties to pledge their calls to Stop Cervical Cancer.
“25,000 women die every year in Europe from cervical cancer” explained Zita Gurmai. “With screening and vaccination Europe could prevent these deaths, and stop the pain and misery of cervical cancer.”
She added “We must not forget women in poorer countries that cannot afford screening and vaccination programmes. Across the world over a quarter of a million women die every year from cervical cancer. A real effort is needed by health professionals, governments in developing countries, and aid donors – including the EU and EU member states – to give women everywhere access to cervical cancer prevention and treatment.”
“We can stop cervical cancer. The challenge is to do it.”
Joining Zita in pledging their support to stop cervical cancer were members of the Executive of PES including Anna Karamanou, PES Women Vice-President, Rovana Plumb, Teresa Riera, Marianne Mikko and Saskia Duives, PES Women Executive Members.
