Bhutto’s courage should inspire Pakistan for a better future

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen wishes the new Leadership of the Progressive Party of Pakistan success in the general elections in Pakistan on 18 February and offers his party’s sincere condolences for the murder of Benazir Bhutto.

“The terrible killing of Benazir Bhutto must not divert Pakistan from the path of democracy. It must not prevent the arrival of a new era and the flowering of new hope for the people of Pakistan.”

“The return of Benazir Bhutto to her country was a brave act, and she has paid the ultimate price for it. Her courage, her belief in a better future for Pakistan, should inspire all those who want to bring an end to the violence and instability that is undermining what should be a prosperous country.” 

“Pakistan is at the crossroads. I hope it is able to make progress down the right path for the sake of all its citizens.”

The PES President also gave his backing to demands for an international inquiry into the murder. “Those responsible for the murder of Mrs Bhutto must be exposed, and an international inquiry could be a good way to establish the truth.”
