Fassino right man for Burma job

The Party of European Socialists today hailed Piero Fassino – leader of the Italian Democrats of the Left and one of the chief architects of the new Democratic Party - as just the right person for the challenging job of EU special envoy for Burma.

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “This is an excellent appointment by Javier Solana.”

“Piero Fassino is an architect of change” said Rasmussen. “He is a very capable politician and has proved that beyond doubt in Italy. There is a big, important and delicate job to be done in Burma and Fassino is the right man for it.”

“Piero Fassino deserves enormous credit for what he has achieved completely selflessly in Italy. Now there is a great opportunity for him to make a difference in Burma too. The Party of European Socialists will be offering him every possible support.”
