PES calls for EU to stand with people and government of Lebanon

20 September 2007

The Party of European Socialists today expressed its full and active solidarity with the people of Lebanon following the shocking return of violence to the country with the killing of MP Antoine Ghanim.

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “The violent killing of Antoine Ghanim is terrible and utterly unacceptable.”

“The EU cannot stand passively by” added Rasmussen. “The EU is engaged in sustaining the peace in southern Lebanon, and must support the Lebanese Government and people in ensuring that the Presidential elections go ahead peacefully and without external interference.”

The PES is in contact with Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado and EU High Representative Javier Solana on the situation in Lebanon and is planning to send a delegation to the region within a month.

The situation in Lebanon will also be on the agenda of the PES Foreign Ministers meeting on October 14.
