7 September 2007

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen congratulated Eamon Gilmore on his election as Labour Party Leader and welcomed his pledge to renew the party and construct a new politics for Ireland.

“The celtic tiger has left too many of its citizens behind” said PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. “Despite its economic success, there are too many people that do not share the country’s prosperity. Ireland does need a new politics, and I know that the Labour Party is the only party that can bring those new politics to Ireland. To do so it needs renewal, it needs to reconnect with the people of Ireland. I wish Eamon Gilmore every success, and I offer him the full support of our European political family. I look forward to welcoming Eamon to our Party Leaders meetings.”

He added “I thank Pat Rabbitte for all his hard work as Party Leader, and I hope that his talents and experience – alongside those of my friend Ruairi Quinn, will serve Eamon Gilmore well in the challenges ahead.”

The next PES Leaders meeting will be on November 23 in Sofia.
