PES congratulates first socialist governor in Argentina
3 September 2007
Hermes Binner, member of the Partido Socialista Popular (PSP), has been elected with almost the 48.5% of the votes in Santa Fe province, the third largest electoral district in Argentina with more than 2.300.000 voters, on September 2, 2007.
Hermes Binner, elected to the National Chamber of Deputies in the parliamentary elections of 23 October 2005, won with 10 points more than former Foreign Minister Rafael Bielsa.
Philip Cordery, PES Secretary General, congratulated Mr Binner “it is a great victory for the left in Argentina. After his impressive achievements as Mayor of the city of Rosario, I am convinced that he will develop the social policies that the people of Santa Fe province deserve.”
During his mandate as Mayor of Rosario in 1995, then re-elected in 1999 till 2003, Mr Binner developed innovative policies that inspired all Latin America:
Decentralization and emphasis on citizen participation in local government;
Emphasis on the public welfare (health, education, cultural activities). The administration's Health Plan was acknowledged by the Pan-American Health Organization as a model for the rest of Latin America;
Promoting Rosario as a strategically placed city with economic and geopolitical influence over a vast area of the country.
Completing Mr Binner’s victory, Miguel Lifschitz of the PSP was reelected Mayor of Rosario city on the same day with almost the 60% of the votes.
The PES congratulates Rubén Giustiniani, President of the Popular Socialist Party, and wishes many more victories of the PSP throughout the country.
