PES calls on EPP to condemn ‘Hungarian Guard’
27 August 2007
The PES condemned the launch on the weekend of a new extreme nationalist group in Hungary, backed the actions of Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany against the group, and urged European conservatives - the EPP - to do the same.
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “It is disturbing to see the launch of a new extreme nationalist group in Hungary – it is the absolute opposite of what Hungary needs today. Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has done the right thing in strongly criticizing the group and asking the Chief Prosecutor to monitor the group’s actions. Everyone in the democratic centre should expose and confront extremism. I call on the EPP – the European conservatives – to condemn in clear words the so-called ‘Hungarian Guard’ and back Prime Minister Gyurcsany’s actions. I have always said extremism will not go away if politicians of the centre left and centre right ignore it.”
