Romanian child care campaign: Over 2.300 signatures collected in only one week time

The Romanian Social-Democratic Party launched its engagement in the PES child care campaign “Put Children First” by organizing a drive to collect signatures for the PES child care Book, and a regional conference on child care held in the Romanian Parliament. In just one week the PSD collected over 2.300 signatures in support of universal child care.

On Saturday 21 April the PSD hosted a child care conference in the Romanian Parliament. Key speakers included Mircea Geoana, Leader of the PSD, Zita Gurmai, President of PES Women, Dan Mircea Popescu, Romanian senator, former Minister of Labour and Social affairs and Silvia Nikoaeva Alexieva, Bulgarian MP. All were invited by Rovana Plumb, President of PSD Women to share experiences on child care.

At the conference the PSD announced its intention to propose a law to increase wages and training for child care workers, “We need correct and decent job opportunities, with equal salaries for people investing their time and energy in our children’s future” stated Mr. Geoana, who underlined in his speech the great commitment PSD shows towards child care.

The problem of financing family-oriented policies was also discussed, and many speakers believed that European funding was also necessary to supplement national resources. “We need to be inventive and investigate all possible financing channels, without relying on one single way of financing child care” stated Ms. Elena Dimitru, Romanian MP, ”It should be the right mixture between public, private and corporate financing sources when it comes to child care, as it is the interest of each one of these categories to set the most protective and engaging framework for the future generations”.

There’s no doubt – Romanian social democrats are committed to universal, affordable and accessible child care for every one who wants it.
