Will Martens support democratic parliamentary vote against EPP President?
27 April 2007
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen challenged EPP President Wilfried Martens to stop supporting the impeached President of Romania, who comes from an EPP member party, and accept the democratic Parliamentary vote for his impeachment.
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “I find it very strange that Wilfried Martens regrets the legitimate vote of a Parliament. The vote to impeach President Basescu had the support of most parties. Instead of complaining about a Parliamentary vote he should be calling on his friend to resign.”
He added “I challenge Wilfried Martens to accept the will of the Romanian Parliament and, through the EPP, to call on President Basescu to resign. It is the only decent course open to him.”
“I don’t’ understand Wilfried Martens – he supports street demonstrations aimed at bringing down a democratically elected Government in Hungary but does not seem to accept a legitimate Parliamentary vote against the President in Romania. He has double standards.
“The list of disreputable politicians supported by Mr Martens is becoming longer.”
