On the Road with the child care book

Florence was the latest stop for the PES child care book on its European tour. Over 300 delegates and visitors at the Italian Democratic Left Congress in Florence signed the child care book that contains the declaration.

Child care provides much more than just a great start for the future generation. It frees parents to pursue their careers knowing their children are learning in a caring environment.

It allows parents and kids to become closer to the community they live in.

And with more nurseries and crèches, comes the opportunity for professional child care workers to work in the job they love: helping to raise the next generation.

We believe that child care should be a basic public service for all who want it.

The PES child care book’s journey started in Porto in December 2006 when it was launched by Ségolène Royal, José Socrates and Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. In the last four months it has been to national party congresses and other meetings in Budapest (Hungary), Antwerp (Belgium), Stockholm (Sweden), Brno (Czech Republic), Dijon and Strasbourg (France), Bucharest (Romania), Sofia (Bulgaria), Warsaw (Poland) and now Florence (Italy). Next stop? Brussels (Belgium), Vilnius (Lithuania), Valletta (Malta) and Berlin (Germany). Final stop? PES Council in November for all party leaders to see the level of support for child care for everyone.  Before the final stop we’ll make sure European Commissioner Vladimir Spidla, who will present a report next year on achieving more child care, gets to see it too!
