Commenting on the signing of the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Agreement PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said:
“Serbia’s destiny is to be a member of the European Union, and no Serbian nationalist can deny it. The signing of the Association Agreement is a first step of enormous significance.”

No Med Union HQ for Tunisia unless it commits to democracy & rights
Commenting on President Sarkozy’s visit to Tunisia, where he is reported to be going to propose to have the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said:
“If democracy and human rights are going to be an important part of the Union for the Mediterranean – and I believe they must be – then Tunisia is a poor choice for the headquarters. I am open to the idea of putting the HQ in the southern or eastern Mediterranean, but Tunisia has a bad record when it comes to freedom of the press, to freedom of association and harassment of legal opposition political parties.”

PES condemns seizure and detention of French Socialist by Hezbollah
The seizure and detention by Hezbollah of Karim Pakzad, a member of the International department of the French Parti Socialiste, was strongly condemned by the Secretary General of the Party of European Socialists, Philip Cordery.
Karim Pakzad was seized by Hezbollah on Saturday 26 April and held for over five hours in a dark cell in the suburbs of Beirut.

PES tells EPP: Zapatero is inspiration for Europe, not Berlusconi
Reacting to comments by EPP Secretary-General Antonio Lopez-Isturiz in El Pais, PES Secretary-General Philip Cordery said “José Luis Zapatero won the election in Spain with a positive agenda for change and on his successful record as Prime Minister. His recent decision to appoint a majority of women to his Cabinet has inspired debate on equality for women throughout Europe. Does the EPP agree with Berlusconi’s recent comment that there are too many women in the Spanish Government?"

PES on Italian elections
Commenting on the Italian election results, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “The return of Berlusconi does not inspire hope for either Italy or Europe. The fact that he is talking about a dialogue with the opposition over reform is mildly encouraging.”

PES backs Veltroni
The Presidency of the Party of European Socialists - bringing together senior representatives of all Europe’s socialist, social democratic and labour parties - agreed to send a clear message of support to the Partito Democratico and its Leader Walter Veltroni and wishing it victory in the Italian elections. PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen told the PES Presidency “It is vital that the progressive, reforming side wins a majority, in the Italian elections. That is why we have to support Walter Veltroni.”
