Pressure mounts on conservatives in European institutions for financial market reform
Pressure is mounting on conservatives in the European Parliament and Commission to abandon their hard-line opposition to improved regulation of global financial markets. Calls for reform are coming from both sides of the Atlantic and from senior conservatives including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the US Administration.

Barack Obama - Hope for Americans and Europeans alike
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen expressed his total support for Barack Obama to win the next US Presidential elections. “Obama is the choice for change and renewal. He gives hope to millions of Americans and Europeans for a fairer world” PES President said.

Three of Europe’s social democratic parties have just elected new, young leaders
In the far north of the EU, Finland’s Social Democratic Party elected a woman – 32 year old former teacher Jutta Urpilainen – as its new leader.
In the far south, the Malta Labour Party elected 34 year old Member of the European Parliament Joseph Muscat to lead the party.
Meanwhile in Poland the SLD - Democratic Left Alliance - elected 34 year old Grzegorz Napieralski as its new leader.

PES Development Ministers call for development aid timetable - and immediate action on global food crisis
Socialist and Social Democratic Development Ministers adopted a declaration calling on the European Union to adopt a timetable for increasing development aid and take immediate action to tackle the global food crisis.

Zita Gurmai supports candidates in the run-up for the Romanian local elections
Zita Gurmai hit the campaign trail in Romania this weekend for the local elections starting on 1 June. On behalf of the PES and PES Women she offered support to Cristian Diaconescu, candidate for Mayor of Bucharest for the Social Democratic PSD, and went to Fetesti county with Mircea Geoana, PSD president and Rovana Plumb, President of PSD Women Organization, to support the PSD candidates.

Financial markets can not govern us! - Letter to the EU Presidency
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Michel Rocard and Daniel Daianu launched an initiative by leading individuals from different political families to get the European Union and the international institutions to respond more decisively to the global financial crisis. Nine former Prime Ministers, three former European Commission Presidents and six former Finance/Economics Ministers signed letters to European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, the Slovenian Presidency of the European Council and to French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

EU is Serbia's destiny
Commenting on the signing of the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Agreement PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said:
“Serbia’s destiny is to be a member of the European Union, and no Serbian nationalist can deny it. The signing of the Association Agreement is a first step of enormous significance.”
