Child care must be highlighted in EU reform guidelines say European Socialists
At a meeting of the PES Lisbon Network socialist and social democratic politicians agreed that a joint submission by the PES and Socialist Group in the EP on new guidelines for the Lisbon Strategy should include “the development of child care facilities, in order at least to meet the Barcelona targets.”

EU needs a better budget than it is today
Commenting on the start of the debate on the 2008/9 EU budget review, launched by the publication of the European Commission's Communication on reforming the budget, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said "The EU should be investing its money on the priorities of the future, not on the needs of the past."

Commissioner McCreevy agrees with PES President on hedge and private equity funds
Charlie McCreevy told the European Parliament that he agreed with PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen that more transparency was needed for hedge and private equity funds. However, he rejected the calls of the PES President and other MEPs for new regulations to force improved transparency and disclosure.

Narbona to chair PES environment Ministers network
Spanish Environment Minister Cristina Narbona has been appointed Coordinator of the PES Network of Environment Ministers and Opposition spokespersons – and is the latest member of an expanding group of Ministers, party leaders and senior politicians who lead pre-Council Ministerial meetings and other political initiatives on behalf of the PES.

The future of left and the European elections discussed in La Rochelle
PES Secretary General Philip Cordery participated in the French Parti Socialiste Summer University in La Rochelle and briefed French socialists on the upcoming consultation on the PES Manifesto for the European elections in 2009. The future of the left in Europe was also on the agenda in a meeting attended by Alain Richard, PS France, Pierre Moscovici, International Secretary of the PS France, Federica Mogherini International Secretary of the Italian DS, Spanish MEP Ines Ayala and German MP Monika Griefhan.

PES congratulates first socialist governor in Argentina
Philip Cordery, PES Secretary General, congratulated Mr Binner “it is a great victory for the left in Argentina". Hermes Binner, member of the Partido Socialista Popular (PSP), has been elected with almost the 48.5% of the votes in Santa Fe province, the third largest electoral district in Argentina, on September 2, 2007.
