PES says to governments and business: keep your eyes on energy prize
Commenting on the climate and energy package due to be presented tomorrow by the European Commission, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said “The package demonstrates that Europe is serious about ambitious climate policies. It is the most important issue to come to the Parliament and Council since the Treaty was resolved, and perhaps the biggest decision for Europe before next year’s elections.”

Free the hostages!
The PES welcomes the release of two hostages, former Congresswoman Consuelo Gonzalez and Clara Rojas, by Colombian rebel group FARC. Efforts must be stepped up to achieve the freedom of Ingrid Betancourt, held for almost six years, and other hostages still held by FARC.

Fog in Court on workers' rights
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen expressed his deep frustration at the ruling of the European Court creating doubts about the right of Swedish trade unions to take action to force a foreign company to observe pay deals reached through collective bargaining.
