Court saves workers from lower wages
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen welcomed the preliminary opinion of the European Court of Justice on the Vaxholm case – involving a Latvian construction company that won a building contract in Sweden and offered Latvian wages to Latvian workers, ignoring Swedish collective agreements. PES President said “This is excellent news. It removes the sword hanging over European collective bargaining”...

European Social Democratic parties sign Balkan Pact – and welcome new Serbian government
Social Democratic and Socialist Parties from the European Union and the Balkans today signed a ‘Pact for social democracy, EU integration and regional cooperation’. “The destiny of Serbia and the other nations in the former Yugoslavia and Albania is to become ever closer to the European Union” said Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the PES, “and eventually becoming full members.”

Put children first: implement the EU child care targets now!
At a conference on child care, hosted by the PES Group in the Committee of the Regions, the PES demanded strong proposals from the European Commission to increase the number, quality and affordability of child care across Europe – as promised five years ago! Regional, national and European politicians united today in calling on the EU to honour its commitments to provide children with pre-school care.

PES welcomes ECOFIN's decision on hedge funds
Commenting on the ECOFIN decision to ask the European Commission to prepare a report assessing the need for EU legislation on retail investment products including hedge funds, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists said "This is good news from our Finance Ministers. They have sent McCreevy back to the drawing board after he denied the need for any regulation."
