Barroso tells PES: Commission is committed to expanding child care
The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, has written to the PES stating that “the Commission is fully committed to the development of child care services.”

PES – Tragedy that ETA has chosen the wrong path
The Party of European Socialists today offered its full support to the Spanish Government – and the Spanish people – in the fight against terrorism. PES President said "It is a tragedy for the Spanish, and especially the Basque, people that ETA has chosen the wrong path. I am sure there will be full support and cooperation from the European Union and member states for the Spanish Government to defeat violence".

Child care in railway stations ?
The Belgian Parti Socialiste has made an innovative proposal to create nurseries in and around railway stations in order to increase the number of pre-school child care places and make nurseries more accessible to parents who have to commute to work.

EU social democrats and US democrats discuss capital funds
A trans-Atlantic alliance to campaign for better regulation of hedge and private equity funds was launched in Brussels, bringing together progressive political forces on both sides of the Atlantic. Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Congressman Barney Frank – Chair of Financial Services Committee and Piero Fassino (DS, Italy) were some of the politicians leading the discussion.

PES supports reform process in Armenia
Following a visit of the PES Working Group on Eastern European Neighbours co-organised with the European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity to Armenia, Peter Schieder, Chair of the PES Working Group on Eastern European Neighbours, says “We would like to express our support for the reform process engaged by Armenia and its transformation according to European standards and principles. We also would like to support and encourage Armenia in pursing its efforts for its participation into European structures”. However Armenia still faces some challenges...

Polish Party Leaders ‘Put Children First’
The Polish Social Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) has thrown its weight behind the PES child care campaign. The SLD organized events in no less than 15 Polish cities in one weekend. It started with a press conference on Friday in a playground in Warsaw!!

PES congratulates Edi Rama for his re-election as leader of the Socialist Party of Albania
On May 12th, Edi Rama, mayor of Tirana, scored a striking victory with 97.5% of preferences. It was the first time that a SP leader was elected according to the “one man, one vote” principle. Deciding on a four years term, SP members from Greece and Italy joined their Albanian counterparts in a turnout of historical significance.

From 2013, parents in Germany will have a legal right to a child care place from the first year of their children’s life – thanks to the social democratic party SPD!
